1. Assess the hand type
A must for all players – fast and easy
2. Find the exact pattern
Optional for advanced/expert players
Remember
Assess the hand type of the opponent's hands and search for the pattern after you see the dummy:
Balanced hands: 4333, 4432, 5332. Maximum 2 length tricks, focus on winning your honors.
Semi-balanced hands: 54 (22, 31), 6 (332, 331), 4441. Up to 3 length tricks. Identifying whether there is a singleton or not can simplify further planning.
Un-balanced: 55 (21, 30), 64 (21, 30), 7 (222, 321). 4 length tricks. The bidding can reveal whether it is a 1-suiter or a 2-suiter. Some honors lose their value (in the declarer's short suits), and some suits are the key to the defensive plan (establishing the side suit).
Goulash hands: 65 (11, 20), 74 (11, 20), 8 (221, 320), or better. Aces can be ruffed already in the first round. Cashing the correct number of top tricks is essential. The side suit can determine the declarer's strategy.
